Liturgical Minister Norms

Bishop Roger Foys has announced new norms governing the appointment and training of extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion and lectors. The regulations were formally announced May 21 and become effective in all parishes in the diocese on March 13, 2011, the first Sunday of Lent.

Before a person can be appointed as an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion or commissioned as a lector, the candidate must attend a diocesan educational session and a parish session.  This training is required for anyone accepting the ministries of Lector or Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion on weekends, weekdays, special liturgies (weddings, funerals, etc), and anyone wishing to bring Communion to the homebound even if it is your spouse or parent. Note: This training is also required of anyone who currently functions in one or both of these ministries.
