Information
(summary)
St.Timothy Preschool will open its doors in the fall of 2008. We will
open our preschool with an enrollment of 78 children-- 36 three year
olds and 42 four year olds. St. Timothy Preschool offers a
Catholic-based, kindergarten readiness program which will enable
children to grow academically, spiritually, physically and emotionally.
The following information will help you to see more clearly the benefits
of sending your child to our preschool.
Morning
Circle Time
We begin our day by greeting each child by name and engaging them in a
variety of activities until the whole class has arrived, we transition
to circle time which begins with the sign of the cross and a prayer.
The children then say the Pledge of Allegiance. During circle time the
children identify the current month and day, and count out-loud the
numbers of the days we’ve had in the month so far. The children also
review the color, shape and number of the month. At the end of circle
time, the child who is the “Helping Hand” for the day will talk to the
class about the weather and dress our weather bear. We will end our
circle time with a prayer.
Class
Activities and Class Size
Upon completion of the morning circle time, each class follows its own
daily routine. Each daily routine alternates periods of high activity
with low activity which accommodates a preschooler’s attention span.
Stories, art, alphabet, music and all other activities are carefully
planned as age appropriate to enhance a child’s growth and development.
Each class consists of 12 three year olds or 14 four year olds along
with a teacher and an assistant. Each class has its own homeroom where
most activities, including snack time, take place. The children will
also go to the music room and play room throughout the day. Once a
month the children will walk over to the church where they will have
“Church Chat” with Fr. Rick or Fr. Jacob. During Church Chat, the
children will be introduced to their monthly biblical themes and then
return to their classrooms to learn songs and make crafts which
correspond with the theme.
Monthly
Newsletter
Each month, your child will bring home
a newsletter which outlines the daily activities for the month.
Newsletters are sent home for both the three and four year old classes
and they provide an outline for what is being done daily in your child’s
classroom. As you are looking over the newsletter you will quickly
notice the weekly themes which include stories and art projects that
correspond with the monthly theme. This correlation fosters reading
development, comprehension and critical thinking skills. Although one
story is listed on the newsletter, several stories are read during story
time each day. At least one story a day is a Bible-based. We introduce
letter names to our three year olds and letter sounds to the four year
olds. Four year olds also learn to blend sounds into three-letter words
and practice writing letters in whole word contexts. During music and
movement, the children will sing a variety of songs, learn finger plays
and poems, play musical instruments and actively move to the music.
Throughout the day, all age groups engage in counting and number
recognition using morning circle time and the classroom centers.
Snack Time
A daily snack is included in the tuition price. Snacks alternate among
sweet, salty and nutritious items served with a choice of apple juice or
water. Snack time always begins with a mealtime prayer. Our students
are individually served the snack and are encouraged to use their
manners by saying, “Yes, please” or “May I have another snack please?”
Hygiene
The children at St. Timothy Preschool will have an opportunity to wash
their hands several times throughout the day. Bathroom breaks are
conveniently scheduled after art and play time, and before snack time.
Children in both the three and four year old program must be toilet
trained to start school. Current immunizations are required for
enrollment.
Good
Behavior
Good behavior is cultivated and rewarded on a daily basis. Our good
behavior “Reminder” system ensures that our students are available for
learning and sets a foundation for future success in school. Our
behavior system uses eight color-coded “reminders”. This is a behavior
specific system which makes problem behavior easier to identify and
correct. Each day the children will begin with an empty pocket. The
object is to keep the pocket empty the entire school day. A “reminder”
will be given if a rule is broken after a child has been warned once
about that behavior. Consistent behaviors that cause the child to get a
reminder will be communicated to the parents so we are all working
together. Children are rewarded for good behavior each day when they get
into the classroom treasure box!
Kindergarten
Readiness Skills and Evaluations
Using a kindergarten readiness assessment, we will evaluate all of the
four year old students at the end of the school year and provide the
parents with a copy of the evaluation results. In the fall and spring,
children in the three and four year old program will receive a skills
development report. Parent conferences are scheduled upon request.
Outreach
St. Timothy Parish is well-known for its dedication to service and
outreach. The preschool families will be asked to complete 20 hours of
outreach a year. The service will be broken down into 10 hours of
community and an additional 10 hours will be completed within the
parish. St. Timothy Preschool will teach the children what it means to
be part of an outreach community. We will help to answer the questions,
“What is outreach? What is service? Who do we help?” We want to teach
the kids that God wants us to serve and then provide experiences under
our monthly themes for the kids to serve others.
