St. Timothy Pastoral Council Minutes
February 20, 2007

Present:  Father Rick Bolte, Mary Brzinski, Jim Sholar, Larry Lense, Mark Dornoff, Jerry Beatrice, Fr. Jacob, and Randy Herbert.

Absent:  Rick Hoban, Jerry Grefer, and Marin Smith.

1. The opening prayer was offered by Jim Sholar, and the January meeting minutes were approved.

2. The agenda was altered slightly to allow Cherye Morgan to present the results of the parish survey first.  The overall results were positive, but not overwhelmingly so.  There is no parish mandate to begin a K-12, or even K-8 school at this time.  There is, however, good support to begin a pre-school.  Father Bolte intends to hire an architect to evaluate what is needed to convert the new section of the parish center into a pre-school, with estimates to do so.  From that point the process will be re-evaluated.  Mark Dornoff moved to approve the first small steps in beginning a pre-school.  Mary Brzinski seconded the motion, and it was carried unanimously.  Father will put a letter in the COMPANION for the information of the parish at large.

3. Pillar Reports:

a. There was no Finance Council meeting in January, and no report.

b. Larry Lense gave the report from the January Worship Committee meeting, the bulk of which appeared in the January PC minutes.  The Worship Committee meeting for February once again took place the day after the PC meeting, and the minutes will be attached to these.  The issue of the timing of meetings came up, and discussion centered on changing the PC meeting to better include other committees.  The result of the discussion is that beginning in August, the PC meeting will take place on the first Tuesday of the month, vice the third.

c. Jim Sholar gave the Outreach Committee report from the February 15th meeting (see attached.)  Discussion centered on the intention to hold a “Community Action Poverty Simulation” at St. Timothy on April 21st.  There was concern about how to stimulate participation and what would be a logical follow-up to the simulation.  Father will seek further information from Lesley Duggan.

d. Marin Smith was absent; therefore, there was no Faith Formation report.

e. Mary Brzinski gave the Community report.  It is too soon to have results from the Dinner Dance, but the attendance was up from last year, 231 vice 188.  The Lenten Fish Fry will begin this Friday, with two types of fish available.  There will be the regular cod tails and hand cut beer battered fish, shrimp, and, for the first time, clam chowder.

4. Ad hoc committee reports:

a. The survey report was given earlier.  See number 1 above.

b. Jim Sholar reported on the progress of the welcoming committee.  The welcoming event in January was a success with nine new families in attendance.  Welcoming was set for February 25th for the 19 new families registered in the parish in January.

c. Mark Dornoff reported that the representative from the stained glass company in Minnesota would be here on Monday, February 26th, at 4:30.  All interested parties should attend.

 5. In the category of new business, Mary reported that there will be a meeting on March 8th to organize a Women’s Prayer Group.  She is contacting parishioners now to gauge interest in the idea.

 6. Since no resolution was reached last month regarding the post in the corner of the parking lot, the subject was reintroduced.  The consensus was that when we have a new business manager, arrangements should be made to remove the post, and plant a tree to prevent people from driving on the grass.

7. Pastor’s Report:

a.   Welcome to Father Jacob.  We’re happy to have you here, and we hope you’re happy to be here.

b.   There are a number of applicants for the position of business manager.  The process is going slowly due to the large number of interviews to be accomplished.

8. Jerry Beatrice addressed the topic of storage on the parish property.  He has done  research and discovered that a 24 ft. by 32 ft. pole barn would cost approximately $6000.  That idea is on hold for now.  The basement of the parish center is of more immediate concern.  The wall which was in the back to limit use was  removed without approval.  It was there to meet fire codes, and so must be replaced, or a sprinkler system must be installed.  Jerry is getting estimates on a sprinkler system.  He is also planning to contact the heads of the various committees that use the storage space to clean out and reorganize the area.

9. The meeting was closed with a prayer offered by Jim Sholar.

10. The next meeting will be on March 20th at 7:15 pm in the parish center.  Randy Herbert has volunteered to offer the opening prayer.  The executive committee meeting is tentatively set for March 6th

Respectfully submitted,
Randy Herbert

Parish Council Secretary

Outreach Pillar

Committee Meeting Date: February 15, 2007 at 7pm

Attendance: Paul Barth, Lesley Duggan, Dick Hentz, Jim Sholar, Pat Rigney, Anna Humphrey, Sharon Ryan and Carol Harvey

Lesley opened the meeting by introducing guest speaker Jennifer Belisle of the Northern Kentucky Community Action Committee (NKCAC).  Jennifer described the “Community Action Poverty  Simulation.”  This program is scheduled to be given by NKCAC to our parish on 4/21/07 from 1-4 p.m.

The program requires about 20 people from NKCAC who act out the roles of resource volunteers, business people, welfare office employees, and other people with whom people in need would be forced to interact.  The number of people from the parish who could participate in this simulation is between 45 and 85 people.  These parishioners would portray people caught in poverty and would learn first hand the troubles and barriers that these people must endure.  The program would require about 2.5 hours for the parishioners and about twice that amount by the people supporting the simulation.

The cost of the simulation would be about $500 plus lunch for the support team.  The purpose of the simulation is to generate awareness of  what it is like to be poor with its extra problems that most people are unaware of as well as awareness of the local agencies and the services which are provided.  There is no set goal for this simulation, but it is hoped that someone from a group (not necessarily the outreach committee) would see some problem that his/her group could help solve.  It was suggested that each ministry at St. Tim’s has at least one representative participate in the simulation.
