Parish School of Religion

Grades 1-8

Purpose

To provide a developmentally appropriate instructional and hands-on program that introduces and enhance the learning of the Catholic faith through the four foundations of parish life; worship, gathering, service and faith formation.

Objectives

Grade 1

·         Independently pray:
-the Sign of the Cross
-Our Father
-Hail Mary
Demonstrate understanding of the Holy Family

·         Demonstrate basic knowledge of the Holy Trinity

·         Have basic knowledge of the Rosary

·         Demonstrate understanding of the Sacrament of Baptism

·         Express knowledge of Lent and Advent

·         Differentiate between the Old Testament and New Testament

·         Express and demonstrate the understanding of the Great Commandment

Grade 2
Sacrament Preparation Program

Grade 3

·         Independently pray:
-the Sign of the Cross
-Our Father
-Hail Mary
-Glory Be
-Act of Contrition
-Prayers of the Rosary

·         Demonstrate basic knowledge of locating Bible passages

·         Demonstrate understanding of the Holy Trinity

·         Express the knowledge of the Sacraments of Initiation

·         Express the knowledge of the Sacraments of Service and Healing

·         Know the 10 Commandments and the Great Commandment

·         Demonstrate knowledge of the Liturgical Year

·         Understand the concept of Saints as God’s Heros

Grade 4

·         Be able to list and understand the Ten Commandments

·         Understanding and meaning of the sacraments

·         Introduce and familiarization to the Bible (All students receive a CYB)

·         Acquaint with the saints and special holy days

·         Saints project completed

·         Demonstrate how students can apply Catholic Christian doctrine into their everyday lives.

Grade 5

·         In-depth monthly instruction on the sacraments

·         Prayer
-know the different types of prayer
-Jesus, our model of prayer
-people of prayer

·         Beatitudes

·         Deeper understanding of the Ten Commandments

·         Understanding of scripture and the psalms

·         Complete understanding of all parts of the Mass

·         Church Tour and completion of Church Model project

Grade 6

·         Origin and instruction of the Church

·         Devotion to Mary

·         Old Testament/New Testament

·         Introduction to the Catechism

·         Ten Commandments

·         Deeper understanding of the sacraments and how to live out

·         Making moral Christian decisions

·         Incorporating different types of prayer in everyday lives
